Osteosarcoma Resection & Hemipelvectomy Surgical Guide
Patient Diagnosis:
This patient was diagnosed with a chondrosarcoma of the left pelvis.
Planned Procedure/Approach:
A P2/P3 and partial P1 hemipelvectomy resection was planned to remove the affected part of the hemipelvis, whilst maximizing bone preservation, in particular the iliac crest.
What Insight Surgery provided:
- Patient specific 3D virtual models using a combination of CT and MRI scans
- Virtual Surgical Plan – Two different tumour margins, wider anteriorly and narrower posteriorly, were agreed with the surgeon and used to set the resection plane locations and angles.
- Surgical guides
- 3D printed anatomical models
- Rapid turnaround
Outcome/Benefits:
- The procedure was completed quickly and successfully in 90 minutes
- Using the narrower margin posteriorly helped the surgeon to avoid critical neurovascular structures at the sciatic notch and preserve as much bone as possible for reconstruction.
- Negative margins were achieved and this successful resection enabled to surgeon to plan a future surgery to reconstruct the affected anatomy with a custom implant
