Intra-articular Distal Radial Malunion Guides

Case Summary:
Intra-articular Distal Radial Malunion Guides
Patient Diagnosis:

This patient was diagnosed with a complex intra-articular distal radial malunion with deformity in the volar aspect of the distal radius.

Planned Procedure/Approach:

Given the complex nature of the procedure compared with a more typical distal radial malunion approach, the surgeon sought Insight Surgery’s assistance in planning this one-shot surgery.

What Insight Surgery provided:
  • Patient specific 3D anatomical models, including a mirrored model of the patient’s other healthy extremity
  • Virtual surgical plan
  • Surgical Guide 1 – a pre-drilling guide with trajectories corresponding to the plate to be used on the patient’s anatomy before the osteotomy. These aid in positioning segments into the planned position following the osteotomy ready for plate fixation
  • Surgical Guide 2 – guiding the osteotomy along the fracture line, mobilizing the volar segment
  • Surgical Guide 3 – a final guide for a ‘clean up’ cut and flush fit for the plate
Outcome/Benefits:

“The surgery went very well and smoothly. Even though it took us 4.5 hours, it seemed much shorter. The patient should have a great outcome and I am impressed by the power of this technique and technology. It was great. The cleanup cut second guide worked BRILLIANTLY and the plate fit perfectly with zero fuss. Predrilling the distal screw holes to position at final correction also helped everything fall into place, zero fuss.”
